The Tucson Guitar Tradition

The story of the guitar in Tucson is inextricably linked to uncompromising artistic standards, deep mentorship, and an international community of musicians who chose the desert as their creative home.

The Tucson Guitar Ecosystem & Community Foundation:

At the heart of the community’s infrastructure are the Bolton Guitar Studies at the University of Arizona, led by Professor Tom Patterson, and the Tucson Guitar Society (TGS), directed by Julia Pernet. TGS plays a pivotal role in visibilizing, promoting, and sustaining the art form across southern Arizona through its stellar international concert series and community outreach.

Having completed both my Master’s and Doctorate in Guitar Performance at the University of Arizona under the mentorship of Professor Tom Patterson, I experienced firsthand the transformative power of the Tucson guitar school. Professor Patterson built a powerhouse of classical guitar education through the prominent Bolton Guitar Studies, fostering an environment where technical brilliance meets profound musical expression.

This collegiate foundation is further strengthened by Pima Community College, where distinguished professors Michel Lich and Steve Lerman provide rigorous training, vital academic pathways, and community engagement.

Educational Outreach & School Programs:

The future of Tucson’s guitar community is continually nurtured through dedicated school and youth programs led by esteemed teaching artists. Michael Nigro brings exceptional technical insight and performance experience to young students at the Academy of Math and Science Music Program, while Ignacio Mondaca and Noah Weig-Pickering foster musicianship and discipline within local educational settings.

Additionally, Philip Emo inspires students through structured, passionate instruction, and Andres Pantoja—who taught for three years at Pistor Middle School—cultivates technical precision and artistic expression in developing guitarists. (Note: Changed “taught” to present or continuous tense to match the active descriptions of the other teachers, unless he is no longer teaching there).

The Tucson Guitar Society Orchestra (TGSO):

The TGSO unites diverse players—from amateurs to professionals—in a collaborative ensemble linked with the University of Arizona’s Bolton Guitar Studies and led by Dr. José Luis Puerta. Meeting weekly during the academic year, the ensemble performs a diverse repertoire in its biannual Holsclaw Hall concert series, successfully fostering mentorship, unity, and a shared passion for guitar performance throughout the community.
